GED Testing

NOTE: Persons seeking to meet the Iowa High School Equivalency Diploma requirements should be aware of companies that claim to offer the Test of General Educational Development (GED) over the Internet or through correspondence courses. There are no on-line correspondence testing programs recognized by the General Educational Development Testing Service (GEDTS) of the American Council on Education (ACE). Persons can only take the Official GED Test Battery at an approved Iowa GED test center. The only way to receive an Iowa High School Equivalency Diploma is to successfully pass the Official GED Test Battery by Iowa state standards. The current Iowa state standard is to achieve a minimum standard score of 410 on each of the five Official GED Test Battery subtests and an overall standard score average of 450.

Why prepare for the GED test?

Adequate preparation for the GED test will assure candidates that they are very likely to pass the test on the first try. It will help them discover any areas they should study.

Step 2: Obtain GED testing approval

New GED candidates should send the following to GED Chief Examiner Ann Waynar at the address below:

    1. an application form
    2. any other necessary documents (see list on GED testing application form for details)
    3. either the testing fee or an authorization from the agency to be billed for the services

Successful GED pretest scores must be recorded on the application by an official GED teacher prior to testing. Application forms are available from the instructors at the GED classes.

GED testers who have previously tested outside the Iowa Central area must have their transcript of test scores sent directly to Iowa Central's Chief Examiner.

The Chief Examiner will mail the candidate a testing approval letter.

Step 3: Begin testing

  1. Schedule a testing appointment at one of the testing centers:

    • Fort Dodge
    • Storm Lake
    • Webster City
  2. Bring the testing approval letter (the one the Chief Examiner sent you after you completed step 2 above) and your photo ID to the testing site.
