4 Credit Hours

Course Description

This course introduces the student to strategies that, when applied properly, will increase reading skills. The major focus is on application exercises that reinforce reading and study skills. This course does not meet graduation credit requirements for certificate, diploma, general studies, or associate degree programs.

Course Placement
This course is a requirement of Iowa Centralís mandatory placement policy. Improved competency in reading can be proven through successful completion of Basic Reading with a final grade of C or better or improved scoring on the post-COMPASS standardized test, a format of the testing used to originally place students in this course.

Course Delivery
FlexNet courses are taught via the internet using iNET (located in TritonPass). Students can enroll in a FlexNet course at any time throughout the semester as long as there is space available in the course, except the last three weeks of the term. Students have until the end of the term to complete the course from the time of enrollment and payment. All FlexNet courses end on the same date, the last day of the term, no matter the enrollment date. FlexNet courses do not have weekly deadlines, but it is highly recommended for students to stay on task.

Software and Hardware Requirements:
Able to use the internet, email, and Microsoft Word.

Assignments
10 Steps to Improving College Reading includes ten chapters focused on key reading comprehension skills. These chapters include practice activities, readings, questions, and tests that build to improve reading skills. Additional readings and practice chapters are also part of the text. Improving Vocabulary Skills is a vocabulary text that provides practice with new vocabulary and strategies for defining new vocabulary in context; quizzes and unit tests track this improvement. A Career Portfolio is a final component of this course, asking you to read up on potential careers and start planning and developing resources for this career. Taking the COMPASS as a post-test is the final requirement for this course.
