FORT DODGE - The Iowa Central dental hygiene students participated in the 2011 Iowa Mission of Mercy at the Tyson Center in Sioux City, Iowa. The event provided over 1,350 individuals with almost $1.2 million in free dental care. The Iowa Central students joined forces with more than 1,300 volunteers to make the two-day event a success.
The Iowa Central students provided cleanings, assisted in triage and restorative care, oral surgeries and processed radiographs.
“This is the largest community dentistry event in Iowa and it was a worthwhile event for our students,” said Renee Piper, Iowa Central’s coordinator of dental hygiene. “Our students want to make it an Iowa Central dental hygiene annual event and volunteer for both days.”
The annual event was held on November 18-19, 2011. It was put on by the Iowa Dental Association, Mercy Hospital in Sioux City, Delta Dental and the Patterson Foundation.
