Fort Dodge, IA - In early December, Iowa Central students hosted their annual community clothing and items drive called “Share What You Wear.” The campaign represents one of the most significant community events that Iowa Central students put on to support those in need over the holiday season. Students hold the drive at Iowa Central’s Career Education Building in Fort Dodge, Iowa. 2019 marked the 15th year for this community service effort at the college.

Drawing in hundreds of residents throughout December 2019, Share What You Wear (SWYW) presents an excellent opportunity for people to donate clothing, shoes, coats, toys, baby items, blankets, towels, school supplies, and other household items that are gifted to the public. This campaign allows those in need or experiencing tough economic times, to provide some holiday cheer for loved ones.;

The event also welcomes members of the community to volunteer and assist during the drive. After the donated materials are collected, volunteers sort and prepare the items for distribution. Once the thousands of donated items are arranged and displayed, the public can choose and take home what they need. In years past, as many as 800 people have turned out for SWYW.

“We are beyond appreciative and proud of the community service initiatives that are lead by our students, especially Share What You Wear,” said Dr. Dan Kinney, President of Iowa Central Community College. “They are making an impact on the community and uplifting what it means to be a part of Triton Nation.”

The event, which began in 2004, was a joint effort by the Iowa Central Student Senate and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. These student-run groups are still organizing the event to this day. Every year, SWYW continues to grow as more people donate items and provide assistance with volunteering efforts.
