Iowa Central Digital Mass Communications and Journalism majors had a unique opportunity on Friday, March 13th to participate in a master class lecture led by Byron Pitts, chief national news correspondent for ABC News and Nightline.
Storytelling with Impact was a three-hour lecture hosted by Pitts and Kenny Irby, senior faculty member at The Poynter Institute, and explored fairness in reporting, story structures, discussing race in America in productive ways, and how to provide context and comfort during devastating news events.
“Lectures such as Storytelling with Impact are so important for journalism and digital mass communications majors because they give real world scenarios and learning,” said Kelli Bloomquist, coordinator of the digital mass communications and journalism programs. “For my students to be able to learn from real world experiences during 9/11, the Elian Gonzalez incident, as well as other major news headlines is phenomenal. Pitts was very straight forward during the lecture and gave budding journalists wonderful advice for their future careers.”
Pitts discussed a variety of topics throughout the lecture and noted that “old school journalism” remains important in a technology driven world, but it is also vital that students and those in the field understand the importance of social media in breaking news events.
“The students and I spoke during the lecture’s lunch break about all of the different things that they had learned during the morning session,” said Bloomquist “and they kept going back to the fact that Pitts noted multiple times that in even the most difficult of times, as journalists whether that be print, broadcast, or even social media, we provide people with an avenue to be heard and we need to do so in a respectful manner.”
Students were also encouraged to live tweet the lecture which can be found at #IC_MassComm.
