Iowa Central’s Director of Theater, Teresa Jackson, selects Lend Me a Tenor for the college’s fall play production which kick starts the busy Performing Arts season for the college.

Written by renowned playwright, Ken Ludwig, Lend Me a Tenor is the winner of 3 Tony Awards and 4 Drama Desk Awards and was a nominee for the 2010 Tony Award, Best Revival of a Play. The show has been described as a comic classic—with a delightful blend of tremendous physical comedy, hilarious lines, mistaken identities, non-stop action and unforced farce. The script is a gold-mine and offers memorable roles for 4 men and 4 women.

The basic premise for the show is this:  on a very important night for the Cleveland Grand Opera Company—Tito Morelli, a world-famous Italian tenor, is set to perform the starring role in Othello. Henry Saunders—General Manager of the company—is stressed about everything turning out right, and insists that his assistant, Max—a nervous, young fellow and secret tenor extraordinaire—watch over the legendary singer’s every move to ensure smooth sailing. After a huge fight with his fiery, Italian wife, Tito accidentally receives a double dose of tranquilizers. Max then has to navigate the company through a sexy soprano, a star-struck girlfriend, a presumed death, slamming doors, and mistaken identities and, ultimately, take on the role of Othello himself. Together, Max and Saunders finda way to save the Opera Company’s big night in grand, hilarious fashion.

This year’s production date lands directly during the Homecoming celebrations for the college, and Director Teresa Jackson introduces another exciting component for audiences with a pre-show mini-concert featuring—appropriately—former amazing Tenors who have graced the Iowa Central stage. Headlining each evening will be the multi-talented Will Lopes—who will actually be back on campus for his induction into the Triton Alumni Hall of Fame—and he will be joined each night by a variety of alumni. Thursday night will include standouts Jefferson Fosbender and Jeff Bluml ; Friday night will invite back Caleb Shaeffer, Aaron Fitzgerald and Taylor Getting ; Saturday will close with Aaron Westrum and Ben Smith. The concert, then, will begin at 7:00 p.m. with the play immediately following. The play is produced by special arrangement with Samuel French.
