Biological Sciences

Iowa Central offers a wide range of courses in the biological sciences to start you on your way to the fascinating world of science. The sciences can be divided into fields such as anatomy and physiology, biology, botany, zoology, and ecology.

Areas of Specialization

There are seven broad areas of biology:

  • Biotechnology/Genetic Engineering
    The study and manipulation of genetic materials and living organisms.
  • Botany
    The study of plants and their effect on the environment.
  • Conservation
    The preservation, conservation and enhancement of our natural surroundings.
  • Genetics/Molecular & Cell Biology
    The broad study of heredity; the blueprint that determines what we are and how we function.
  • Immunology
    The study of how the body is able to protect itself against foreign substances.
  • Marine Biology
    The study of plants and animals which live in a water environment.
  • Microbiology/Virology
    The study of microscopic organisms and their effects on other life forms.
