“I love students, so it’s easy to love what I do! My favorite part of my job is becoming a mentor to students each year, celebrating their successes or riding out their struggles with them. I believe everyone deserves the chance at an education, and whether you are 18, fresh out of high school, or 35 coming to college for the first time, we have your back! We are here to guide you through the process leading up to the first day and every day, and every semester after that. To have a ‘person’ that you are comfortable with, understands, and is cheering you on is so important. I love that I can be that person to our students.”
Jenny has worked at Iowa Central since December of 2000. Jenny is currently the Advising Director at Iowa Central where she works with first-generation students and students in the developmental learning community. Prior to becoming Advising Director, Jenny worked as an associate in the Liberal Arts and Sciences department for over 12 years.
In her current position, Jenny enjoys working with students who may have social, personal or academic barriers when it comes to their education. Celebrating successes with these students is one of Jenny’s greatest motivators when it comes to her position. Jenny serves on committees across campus and is also a co-advisor for the Iowa Central Student Senate.
Jenny is a graduate of Iowa Central Community College and Buena Vista University with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
Jenny is married to Ira Shivers. They have four children and one grandchild. They are owners of TC Mae’s Family Diner. In her spare time Jenny loves to decorate, and travel any chance she gets and watch Netflix!

“Iowa Central is a Community College unlike any other. Our students are able to experience the “feel” of a four-year institution while getting the perks and benefits of a junior college. There is a plethora of educational opportunities for students whether they are seeking a higher degree after Iowa Central or plan to transition into the work force, as well as several options to get involved outside of the classroom. All staff and faculty are dedicated to their student’s needs and have the student’s success as their top priority. I have Iowa Central to thank for not only my education but my growth as an individual, and it is important to all of us that every student leaves feeling the same way. It is no question Iowa Central is the best junior college in the nation!”

Advises: Nursing, Radiology, Dental Hygiene, Medical Lab Tech, Medical Assistant, Paramedic/EMT, Nurse Aide
I will be the academic advisor for health sciences.
I graduated from Iowa Central with my associate of applied science as a medical laboratory technician and my associate of arts. While at Iowa Central, I was involved in the student ambassador program and student government.
In my free time I like to water ski, go turkey hunting, read, watch movies, and spend time with my family.
After going through the college process, I wanted to use my experiences to help other students. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to do and spent a large amount of time with my advisor trying to figure out all of my options. I know first-hand how everyone at Iowa Central puts the students first and goes above and beyond to ensure that they have the best experience possible. I’m hoping my experience in the MLT program at Iowa Central, and knowledge of how life looks in a hospital setting after graduation, will help current and prospective students have a better understanding of health sciences. As a student, I loved that Iowa Central was a two-year college with a university feel. I also loved all of the activities that are put on for students and opportunities available to meet other students and get connected! I am very excited to be a part of this team and in a position to help give others the same great experience I had!

“I love meeting new people and having the chance to help students thrive during their time at Iowa Central. When I was looking to enroll in college, I had no idea what I wanted to go to school for. My advisor made the decision-making process so easy. I felt like I wasn’t alone while entering a big milestone in my life. That experience made me want to be that friendly face and helpful resource to the students looking to further their academic education here at Iowa Central.”

In 2018, I graduated from Iowa Central Community College with my Associate of Arts Degree. While at Iowa Central, I participated in Concert Choir and with the help of having access to many different types of classes, I decided to pursue psychology as my major. After graduating from Iowa Central, I decided to transfer to the University of Northern Iowa. While there, I decided to continue being involved in music, so I participated in Women’s Chorus. I attained my bachelor’s degree in psychology in Spring of 2020.
After graduating from UNI, I began working in the social work field at several different agencies. I have always loved being able to help others. I feel as though my prior experiences out in the field can help me guide prospective students and current students in their educational journey. I began working in academic advising because I wanted to continue helping others, while also working at a place that is important to me! I made a lot of great memories during my time of being a student at Iowa Central, and now I get to come back as a staff member!
In my free time, I love to spend time with my family, friends, and dog. We adopted our dog in 2020, and he is a Cattle Dog/Staffordshire Terrier mix. I love going for walks and being outside—in the summer you could expect to see me going to parks to walk trails or even going kayaking. For more laid-back activities, I love watching Friends, the Office, doing puzzles, and listening to music. I am grateful to have the opportunity to work somewhere that helped me discover what I wanted to do after college, so I am hoping I can do the same for the students who I advise!
