While we hope all new roommates will eventually become good friends, we realize this doesn't always happen. If, after trying to work out differences, you and your roommate still find that you don't like living together, you have the option of moving to another room – depending upon the availability of space. You will need to place your name on a waiting list in each of the buildings you are interested in moving to and wait for a space to become available.

Residents are responsible not only for cleanliness of their own rooms but also are expected to cooperate in the maintenance of living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms. Periodically the Residence Hall Staff will check apartments for cleanliness, proper furniture arrangement and overall maintenance. Residents must comply with any directives regarding bedroom, living room, kitchen or bathroom maintenance. Only thumbtacks may be used on the walls of the rooms. No writing or painting will be permitted in the apartment. If bunk beds are dismantled, residents are responsible for storage of parts within their room as well as proper assembly before check-out.

Iowa Central Community College reserves the right to reassign individuals to different apartments and the right to enter and inspect an apartment:

• When it appears that the occupant of the room may be physically harmed or endangered;
• When it appears that residence hall property may be damaged;
• When it appears residence hall policy is being violated;
• For periodic scheduled maintenance.

If you decide to leave the college, please don’t move out without officially checking out. It is necessary to stop at the Housing Office. The rest is easy. The Housing office will tell you what to do - and most important, how to prevent your residence hall charges from continuing after you’ve left school.

Iowa Central has an Open Visitation Policy. Students may be visited by guests of the opposite sex at any time. Visitation to the extent of cohabitation is not allowed (i.e., guests of the opposite sex are not permitted to stay overnight).

A lost room key should be reported to the office. To receive another key you must pay $25.00 for a room key. This needs to be paid before you receive the key.

Residents who are locked out of their room should contact the office to gain admittance to their room. This will cost $25.00 to be let back into the room.

Iowa Central Community College accepts no responsibility for the theft or loss of money, valuables or personal property of the students for any cause whatsoever. However, any theft or loss of money or property should be reported to a residence staff member. It is strongly advised that residents have their possessions (including automobile) insured through an insurance company.

A. The resident shall permit no waste and suffer no injury to be done to their room, the residence hall, or any equipment, fixture, or furnishing located therein, and shall return in as good condition as at the beginning of the contract, natural wear and tear excepted. Room damages of undetermined origin will be assessed to the occupants currently assigned. However, the resident will not be responsible for, and the college waives all right of recovery against the resident for, damage for which the college is reimbursed under any fire and extended coverage insurance policy in effect at the time of loss.

B. The resident shall make no room alterations, including painting or construction.

The resident shall not take any of the equipment of the building therefrom, nor shall any furnishings or equipment from the lounges or any general purpose area be moved to the resident’s room.

In any cooperative living situation rules are provided as guidelines to promote an environment conducive to group living and where cooperation, organization, responsibility and protection of individual rights are evident. Like any community, residents must be accountable for their infractions against the living community. Infractions that violate the guidelines developed by the college may result in immediate dismissal from on-campus housing. The College may determine that immediate dismissal is necessary to protect persons violating the guidelines, other residents, college or apartment property or to simply maintain an atmosphere conducive to continued social and academic growth.

The College reserves the right to immediately dismiss any resident for infractions of these guidelines without notice and without the opportunity for a hearing. If a student desires a hearing, one may be set at the discretion of the Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Development. The hearing committee will consist of the Vice President, Director of Residence Life, Director of Athletics, and a Faculty Representative. Because the resident has been dismissed from on-campus housing, the hearing will take place immediately and resolution made within 24 hours.

Fines may be levied by the Residence Halls Staff for infractions of the rules. When a fine is levied, the student has one week to pay the fine. If the fine is not paid in that one-week period or payment arrangements not made, the fine will double. If the fine is not paid by the end of the academic term, the student will not receive grades for that term nor be allowed to register for the following term nor be able to have records transferred to another school or to an employer.

Some of the infractions for which discipline, up to and including immediate eviction, may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Illegal possession or use of any firearm explosive, dangerous chemical, or other weapon.
• Keeping pets in the residence halls.
• Drugs – Illegal possession, sale or use of alcohol or a controlled substance.
• Tampering with the fire alarm.
• Anyone found attempting or actually in the act of thievery, breaking and entering or vandalism.
• Removing furniture.
• Removing screens from the windows.
• Entering prohibited areas.
• Assault and battery or any other fighting.
• Insubordination to any College or Residence Hall staff member including a Resident Assistant.
• Violation of any of the laws of the State of Iowa, municipality of the City of Fort Dodge, or the United States of America.
• Violation of any other policies or guidelines established by this manual or your residence hall contract.

The Iowa Central Community College residence halls are committed to maintaining an academic and social environment conducive to the intellectual and personal development of students and to the safety and welfare of members of the college community. Accordingly, the possession of, or consumption of alcoholic beverages in any form is strictly prohibited within the residence halls and the outside areas surrounding the residence halls. Any resident found consuming or found in possession of alcohol will be disciplined up to and including immediate dismissal without notice and without the opportunity for a hearing. This prohibition covers all residents, not withstanding the fact that a resident may have attained legal drinking age.

Iowa Central is a tobacco free campus. This includes chewing tobacco as well as smoking materials.

Solicitation of any type of nature or door-to-door sales in the residence halls is prohibited.

Each student will be given a personal data sheet. In order that we may help you should anything arise, please indicate on the form any physical ailments or any regularly taken medication. These will be held in confidence. If you need help, contact a Resident Assistant or one of the directors. These people will assist you in getting help. Most of the staff will be certified in first aid CPR.

In the case of a tornado or a severe storm, residents should go to the first floor hallway. Stay away from windows and sit as quietly as possible.

Tornado Watch
A tornado watch signifies that atmospheric conditions are such that a tornado may develop. The National Weather Service will issue a tornado watch for a specific time period and geographic area. Although a tornado watch does not represent imminent danger, it should not be treated lightly. Residents should monitor television and radio weather bulletins and begin taking precautionary measures.

Tornado Warning
A tornado warning means that a tornado has actually been sighted in the immediate area. City sirens will sound at a steady blast and tone for three to five minutes.

Tampering with fire alarm systems and equipment is a violation of Iowa law. Students unnecessarily setting off or tampering with the fire alarm system will be subject to a fine and severe disciplinary action, including immediate dismissal from the residence halls.

In case of fire:

• The signal is a continuous sounding of the alarm.
• When the fire alarm sounds, evacuate immediately.
• Turn off lights, and close doors as you leave. DO NOT LOCK THE DOOR!!
• Each resident should have on a coat, hard-soled shoes, and carry a towel for smoke inhalation prevention.
• WALK, DO NOT RUN, to the appropriate exit.
• Continue outside the building until you are clear of the building. All residents will meet in the parking lot.
• Do not re-enter the building until the all-clear signal has been given. The all-clear signal is the stopping of the alarm.

The Residence Halls will be closed over the Christmas holidays. All apartments will close at 6:00 p.m. on the Friday of finals week, and reopen on the Sunday preceding the first day of second semester at 12:00 noon. Exceptions for the Christmas closing need to be made in advance with the Director of Residence Life.

There is general quiet hours 24 hours a day. This means that the hall staff reserves the right to determine if a resident is creating excessively loud noise. Mandatory quiet hours will prevail from 9:00 p.m. through 10:00 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday and from 11:00 p.m. through 10:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

If a resident violates quiet hours with thier stereo for the second time, the stereo will be confiscated until the end of the semester or the resident will be forced to take the stereo home for the remainder of the semester.

Residence Hall students are encouraged to participate in residence hall-sponsored activities and on-campus intramural and college sponsored activities.

Students who live on campus are assigned a mailbox after completing a Request for Mailbox form.  The form is available on the housing tab of Iowa Central’s home page or at the mail room.

Incoming mail is processed Monday through Friday and will be available by 12:00 noon.  Packages may also be received in the mail room.  Lost keys can be replaced at a charge of $25.00.  If the lost key is found, the charge will be credited to the student’s account.

All students are required to do a mail room check out at the end of the spring semester.  (If leaving the dorms mid-year, key must be returned before leaving.)  Any student who does not turn in their key will be charged $25.00 for the replacement.  There will be NO refunds after 30 days.  First class mail will be forwarded for four weeks, only if the check out process has been completed.

Laundry rooms equipped with coin-operated or PayRange App washers and dryers and are located in Buildings 4, 7, 9B, and 15. In the Woodruff Complex the machines are located on every floor or the East section and on the ground floors of the Central and West sections.

To post signs in each building and the Triton Inn, permission must be granted by the Director of Residence Life.

These guidelines and policies may be amended from time to time without notice. We will advise you of these amendments or additions as quickly as possible.
