On Friday, December 5th, Iowa Central Community College awarded several students Production Welding Certificates. After completing the course, Iowa Central Community College offered a “speed interview” day, where employers, such as Meridian, Tyson, and the Goodwill Connection Center, had the opportunity to come in and interview each of the students who completed the course. Some of these students, however, had already been offered a job. This is a great experience for students to consult with several companies around the area. After doing so, most of the students received additional interviews at one or more of the companies that were present. With welding careers on the rise and all the opportunities around the Storm Lake area, students can receive training and experience very quickly once the course has been completed.
Iowa Central Community College has implemented and successfully completed several certificate classes at the Storm Lake campus. These certificate programs are made possible by the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant. The programs are offered as non-credit but are given advance standing to be translated to credit should the student choose to go on for the full diploma. The classes included are those considered by Iowa Central’s advisory board to be crucial for entry level job placement. Therefore, these certificates open up two possible pathways for students to pursue. They can either add them to their resume to seek immediate employment, or turn them into credit, giving them a head start on earning a diploma.
After the students finished their final projects, Lindsay Henderson, the TAACCCT Grant Project Manager from Iowa Central Community College, was present to hand out the certificates and offer words of congratulations and encouragement. The students were all grateful for the opportunity given to them and very excited to start their new path in life. Many of these students have overcame many life obstacles and can now proudly share their own success story with the world. The confidence, networking opportunities, and the drive to succeed increased drastically from the beginning to the end of the class in each person.
Iowa Central Community College will be holding two more production welding certificate programs in Storm Lake starting in February. Enrollment is open now for the spring semester in Storm Lake. I chose Iowa Central because of the low cost of tuition and it was close to home.
