Fort Dodge, IA - Iowa Central Community College hosted their annual Triton Jazz Festival on Thursday, January 9th and Friday, January 10th. This two-day event invites high schools of all sizes from across the state to compete and share their respective school’s musical talent on the College’s campus in Fort Dodge. 2020 marked the seventh year in which Iowa Central has put on this competition for Iowa high schools.

This year’s festival had 31 bands and over 600 students (ranging from Class 1A to Class 4A). Some high schools traveled as far away as 100 miles to participate in the event. The performances and award ceremonies were held in Iowa Central’s Decker Auditorium. Awards were given to the top 3 schools in each class. This event is sanctioned by the Iowa High School Music Association (IHSMA).

The results for the top bands in each class are as follows:

Class 1A
1st - Newell-Fonda
2nd - Audubon
3rd - St. Edmond

Class 2A
1st - Roland Story
3rd - Belmond Klemme

Class 3A
1st - Gilbert
2nd - ADM
3rd - Union (LaPorte City)

Class 4A
1st - Sioux City East - Jazz I
2nd - Denison
3rd - Sioux City North

“We are very proud to host this event for the seventh year in a row,” said Dr. Dan Kinney, President of Iowa Central Community College. “The Triton Jazz Festival provides a great opportunity for students to perform and hone their skills in a collegiate atmosphere.”

Not only does the Triton Jazz Festival celebrate and engage students in the musical genre, but it also helps these schools prepare for the Iowa Jazz Championships which take place in Ames, Iowa, on April 7th.

I have enjoyed meeting a lot of new friends and hanging out with them from other states or countries that come and learn at Iowa Central.
