Fort Dodge, IA - Construction of Iowa Central Community College’s new 44,000 square foot Greehey Family Student Success Center nears completion in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The college administration expects the assembly of this transformational building to be finished in the latter half of July 2020. Once move-in ready, the college will relocate several campus services into the new complex, while adding final touches. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Student Success Center’s grand opening has yet to be determined.
What was once a parking lot, will now be an expansive two-story center for the Fort Dodge campus’ veteran services, student advising, enrollment services, counseling, health care, career services, distance learning, and more. Students will be able to receive a variety of support that the college offers, from academic advising and campus housing to online education and distance learning.
“Iowa Central is growing, and the new Greehey Student Success Center is a testament to that,” said Dr. Dan Kinney, President of Iowa Central Community College. “Having a wide cross-section of our collegiate services housed in one centralized place will create a better experience and support dynamic for the students and staff on campus.”
The building’s namesake stems from Bill Greehey, a successful businessman and philanthropist. His foundation donated $3 million to the project in 2017 alongside raised funds from the 2018 Bond Referendum, which provided funding for the new building. This financial backing is not the first donation Greehey, and The Greehey Family Foundation have made to Iowa Central. In 2016, the Greehey family donated $1 million to provide scholarships for first-generation college students.
Greehey, a graduate of Fort Dodge Senior High, grew up on the east side of Fort Dodge with his parents and two sisters. His nationally renowned philanthropy has supported countless charitable causes throughout his life and career. He established the Greehey Family Foundation in 2004 and has given well over $100 million in grants to a wide range of worthy causes.
“We can’t say thank you enough to the Greehey family for their continued support of Iowa Central. Their donation will have a lasting impact on every student who walks on our campus,” said Kinney. “The Greehey family’s donation will allow us to continue to give our students the best possible support we can and help them make the most out of their college experience so they can move on to achieve their life goals.”
Construction on the Greehey Family Student Success Center began in October 2018 with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Greehey. Throughout the build, there were no significant delays. The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic did not critically hinder construction efforts, aside from minor disruptions in the building material supply chain.
The college is currently working on several other construction projects. Once the Greehey Center is open, the previous Student Success Center building will be renovated and turned into learning spaces for Iowa Central’s visual arts, photography, computer networking and programming, and engineering decision technology programs. Campus security is being enhanced as well. Buildings on Iowa Central’s campuses will have access card entry, added security camera capabilities, and new lighting.
I love the late nights in the library studying with friends, sometimes laughing more than studying.
