Each year, Iowa Central students, faculty and staff come together in a joint effort for the annual “Share What You Wear” event.

The 17th annual event is set for Saturday, December 4 at the Iowa Central Career Education Building. Donations, though, can be dropped off on several days throughout the month of November leading up to the event.

A campus-wide community clothing event designed to help those in need over the holiday season, Share What You Wear accepts good clean clothing, boots, shoes, coats, gloves, hats, toys, school clothes, baby items, usable household items, men’s and women’s work clothes, sheets, towels, blankets, travel-size soaps and shampoos and school supplies.

“It is well-known throughout the community as a place to come if you need any of the items,” said Jenny Shivers, Advising Director at Iowa Central. “The doors are open Saturday morning to anyone who is in need. We serve breakfast and lunch free of charge to them, and they can take as much or as little as they need.

“This year, we are expecting a very large crowd because we did not have Share What You Wear last year. We are excited to be able to offer it to the community again.”

Also, any new item that could be wrapped as a Christmas gift is encouraged.

“The best part is to see the faces of so many children that get to take home a toy or wrap a present they have picked out for their parent to put under the tree,” Shivers said.

The campaign allows those in need or experiencing tough economic times to provide some holiday cheer for their loved ones. It is also the largest community event of the year for Iowa Central.

“We are helping the community in so many ways,” said Jaedyn Condon, the Iowa Central Student Body President. “Whether that is donating items, money or even your time, you are giving back to our community. This is an event that people look forward to every year. It gives people a chance to come together and work together to support the community.

“Everyone involved are very honored to be able to help out. The student senate group is doing a great job selling t-shirts, with the proceeds going towards buying new toys for the kids. We have also been working the truck for dropping off donations. For all of us, it has been very rewarding to give back.”

The drop-off location is at the Career Education Building where a storage trailer is located. Days for collection are every Monday and Wednesday in November (except November 24) and December 1 from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. Also from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Friday, December 3.
