When Noah Susong arrived at Iowa Central Community College, he had an idea of where he wanted to go.
Now, though, Susong feels prepared to enter the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business in the fall when he completes his Business degree at Iowa Central.
“I feel more prepared to transfer,” said Susong, a native of Waterloo. “Having the extra classes under my belt being a third-year has allowed me to learn more and be more prepared for what is to come.
“I’ve gotten a year older and matured more, which has allowed me to become more of a man today.”
Susong, who also plays baseball at Iowa Central, has flourished under the guidance of the instructors in the business classes, including David Barwin.
“What I really like about the business program is that Mr. Barwin allows us to get a feel for the business world,” Susong said. “He puts us in groups because in the business world, you have to be able to work with your co-workers and partners along with being self-motivated.
“Mr. Barwin does a good job of putting it all into perspective, giving us the truth about the business world. He is very transparent with what to expect and what is going to happen, which will help us be prepared for it.”
The similarities between his business classes and being on the Triton baseball team have also helped Susong grow.
“They kind of go hand-in-hand,” Susong said. “You are going to meet new people every day and with baseball, you are with those same people almost every single day. In class, you might not see the same people each day, but you have to be ready to collaborate with them just the same.
“My classes have helped me get used to working with others.”
Susong has also been given a new appreciation for the word family since coming to Iowa Central.
“It’s really just like a big family here,” he said. “Everybody is so cool and you just feel comfortable around everybody. I know a lot of people want to stick to their group, but here, you can just hang with anybody and talk to everybody.”
I love having a home away from home with all the friendships I have created.
