First generation college students at Iowa Central will be getting a little help from the community in obtaining items they may need for their homes or campus housing.

Iowa Central was chosen as the recipient of personal care items purchased by CJ Bio America Inc. of Fort Dodge.

The items are intended to be given as needed to first generation college students from low income families.

Todd Anderson, external relations coordinator at CJ Bio America said the items will be a positive boost for such students and often impact their full college experience.

“Having the things they need; that can make all the difference in whether or not a student comes to class,” said Anderson.

Iowa Central provided CJ Bio America with a list of the most requested items from the Triton Closet, which assists and provides students with necessary personal care and hygiene items.

On Friday Sept. 2, Iowa Central accepted a carload of donations of bags filled with items such as body wash, laundry detergent, sanitizer, cleaning products, blankets, pillows and clothing items.

Anderson said he hopes the donations will give the recipients a sense of pride in what they have accomplished as first generation college students.

“They should be able to take pride in being in college as the first generation,” he said “Sometimes, these students may not have the resources to just access the things they need and we don’t want that to happen.”

As a former member of the Iowa Central faculty, Anderson said he has witnessed firsthand the difference that can be made when students’ personal needs are met.

“It can be the difference in whether or not you see them every day or not at all.”

He hopes that providing for students needs will continue to positively impact enrollment and student retention at Iowa Central.

“Iowa Central does well with positive enrollment trends and we hope we can continue to help that grow,” said Anderson.
