The instrumental music department at Iowa Central will be presenting its first concert of the 2023-2024 year on October 31.

The Iowa Central Jazz Band will open the concert with their set which features “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “Fables of Fabus,” “Better Get it in Your Soul,” and “Flight of the Foo Birds.”

The Brass Ensemble will play a set of familiar tunes by The Beatles including “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” “Yesterday,” “Michelle,” “Eleanor Rigby,” and “Come Together.”

The Percussion Ensemble, directed by Jeremy Smith, will play Chris Cockarell’s arrangement of “Comic Relief,” “Second Thoughts,” by Evan Chapman, and will transition into the Halloween spirit closing out their portion of the concert with Alan Keown’s “Witch Doctor.”

The concert band, under the direction of Paul Bloomquist, will close out the concert with three selections: the first, “Robin Hood Fanfare,” features the familiar sounds from the opening scene of the popular Kevin Costner film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.” The second selection will feature the sounds of “Star Trek: Through the Years.”  The third selection, Malcolm Arnold’s arrangement of “Tam O’ Shanter” illustrates the eerie story of the Scottish Poem of the same title by Robert Burns. The 10-minute piece features several movements and brings Burns’ characters to life through the music as well as imagery which will be projected on screen as the band plays.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the Bioscience and Heath Sciences Building Auditorium on the Iowa Central Campus. Admission to the concert is free.

Iowa Central gave me the opportunity to do both things I wanted for myself. To major in dental hygiene and play soccer.
