A day for high school students to test their knowledge and skills in a variety of subjects will be returning to Iowa Central this spring.

Competition Day, which was held on campus for more than 20 years prior to COVID-19, is returning for 2024, and will offer 23 different opportunities for students to test their skills and knowledge both individually and as a team. Competition Day will take place on Friday April 5.

“The whole idea of the competition is to give students in our area a chance to see how they stack up to other students,” said TJ Martin, Dean of Distance Learning at Iowa Central. “It is all about career exploration and a great way for students see where they rank among their peers and students from other schools.”

The day will begin with an opening session and welcome and students will then break out into their competition locations where they will spend more than 2 hours participating in various activities based on their subject of choice.

Students will have opportunities to participate in everything from a scavenger hunt style healthcare skills test, to preparing a brunch in culinary arts to building walls in carpentry or testing their knowledge of the Spanish language.

“Everything will involve hands-on skills or games,” said Martin. “We approached our instructors and encouraged them to get creative.”

Participating students will complete the tasks and be judged on various aspects of their subject knowledge and completed projects.

“It is about fun, but the students know there is work to it, too,” said Martin. “For example, if a student is participating with the Spanish Department, they can participate in the games, but they will need to know how to read and speak some Spanish, in Culinary they’ll be judged on things like appearance and taste and carpentry they’ll demonstrate that they can read a blueprint and build; they are scored on their knowledge of the subjects.”

Individual Competition areas include 3D Modeling, Auto Collision, Automotive Technology, Basic Electricity, Computer Networking Technology, Design/Photography and Broadcasting Innovation, Diesel Tech, HVAC, Lathe and Mill, Podcast Creation and Promotion, Residential Wiring, Shop Operations and Unsolved Mysteries Marksmanship.

Group Competitions will include Business “Shark Tank,” Carpentry, Computer Programming, Culinary/Baking/Hospitality Management, Future Educators “Pay it Forward,” Health Sciences, Psychology, Spanish Games, Turfgrass Jeopardy and Welding Fabrication.

The day is free of charge to attend and open to all 9-12 grade students in Iowa Central's nine-county service area. Scholarships of up to $500 will be award to qualified seniors for first, second and third places. Registration deadline is Friday February 9. To register for the event online visit
