The future of renewable fuels shines brighter than ever as Iowa Central Community College proudly celebrated the grand opening of its state-of-the-art Fuel Testing Laboratory on February 7, 2025. The event, held at 1310 A Street West in Fort Dodge, marked a significant milestone in the region’s commitment to advancing biofuel technology and ensuring the highest standards in fuel testing.

Iowa Central was honored to welcome Governor Kim Reynolds, along with Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig among other distinguished guests, to commemorate this occasion. Governor Reynolds expressed her unwavering support for the laboratory and its critical role in the biofuel industry, emphasizing the lab’s importance in maintaining fuel quality and innovation.

"The legacy of the Two Million Mile Haul lives on in Iowa Central's independent fuel testing laboratory and the outstanding work it does every day to ensure consumers and industrial users can be confident in the biofuels they purchase," Governor Reynolds stated. "As Iowa's officially authorized quality fuel testing agency, it is a first-class institution with few—if any—peers of its kind in our nation."

The newly expanded facility represents a major leap forward in renewable fuel research and testing. With cutting-edge equipment, including cetane and octane rating engines, the lab will now be able to analyze Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and other emerging bio-based fuel innovations. Dr. Donald Heck, a key leader in the development of the lab, reflected on the journey that led to this remarkable achievement.

“Our new facility represents an incredible journey from our humble beginnings on campus to this new, built-for-purpose industrial laboratory space," Dr. Heck shared. "But none of this could’ve been possible without the dedication of my team, past and present, to make this a successful and self-sustaining business within the College."

The Iowa Central Fuel Testing Laboratory has long been a trusted partner in the renewable fuel sector, providing independent testing services to producers, marketers, laboratories, and research organizations. As the official fuel testing facility for the Iowa Bureau of Weights and Measures, the laboratory plays a crucial role in upholding fuel quality and compliance standards across the industry.

Dr. Jesse Ulrich, President of Iowa Central Community College, expressed his enthusiasm for the facility’s future impact: “On behalf of Iowa Central Community College, we extend our greatest congratulations to the teams that have contributed to the opening of the expanded, state-of-the-art Iowa Central Fuel Testing Laboratory. We will continue to support the renewable and biofuel sectors that contribute greatly to the economic strength of our region, state, and nation.”

The grand opening event featured insightful remarks from esteemed guests and exclusive tours of the new facility. Members of the Fort Dodge community had the opportunity to witness firsthand how this advanced laboratory will serve as a hub for renewable energy innovation.

With a firm commitment to excellence and sustainability, Iowa Central Community College is poised to lead the way in the renewable fuel industry. The Fuel Testing Laboratory stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation, ensuring a cleaner, more efficient energy future for Iowa and beyond.
