Iowa Central Community College Student Senate members participated in Community College for Iowa’s Leadership in Action Week, an initiative designed to empower students, highlight the importance of community colleges, and advocate for educational opportunities across the state.

The week featured several key events, beginning with the Student Legislative Seminar on Tuesday, February 18, at Curate in Des Moines. From 12 to 4 p.m., students engaged in discussions on legislative processes, higher education policies, and advocacy strategies. That evening, Iowa Central students attended the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Awards Ceremony, celebrating academic excellence and leadership among Iowa’s community college students.

On Wednesday, February 19, the Student Senate participated in Community College Day on the Hill at the Iowa State Capitol. The event, running from 7:30 a.m. to noon, was a significant opportunity for students to meet with legislators, share their experiences, and discuss the impact of community colleges on workforce development. The day began with Lieutenant Governor Chris Cournoyer officially proclaiming it Community College Day on the Hill, emphasizing the essential role of Iowa’s community colleges in local economies.

Iowa Central students were welcomed in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, where they observed legislative proceedings and engaged with policymakers. Additionally, students toured the Capitol and connected with key stakeholders, including Iowa Central Business & Community representatives and AgState, a valued partner in workforce training and economic development.

Leadership in Action Week reinforced Iowa Central’s commitment to student success by ensuring that legislative support remains strong for programs that help students graduate efficiently, minimize student loan debt, and secure rewarding careers. Events like these serve as a powerful reminder of the collaborative efforts between students, administrators, and legislators in shaping the future of community college education in Iowa.

I chose Iowa Central because of the amazing opportunities and teachers. When I came to visit, I fell in love with the teachers in my program of study.
