From Textbooks to Tactical Gear: Criminal Justice Students Get Hands-On SWAT Experience

Last week, Iowa Central Community College’s Criminal Justice students traded in their textbooks for tactical gear as they got an up-close look at SWAT equipment, thanks to the Webster County Sheriff's Office SERT team. This hands-on experience gave students a real-world perspective on the specialized equipment and tactics used in high-risk law enforcement operations. These experiences are invaluable in shaping the next generation of law enforcement professionals right here in Fort Dodge!

The field of Criminal Justice offers a wide array of challenging and rewarding career opportunities. From Law Enforcement and Corrections to Public Security and Forensic Laboratories, the demand for well-trained professionals continues to grow. Criminal Justice professionals perform a variety of essential duties, including:

  • Investigations and evidence collection

  • Traffic enforcement

  • Inmate supervision and correctional counseling

  • Hunting regulation enforcement

  • Court services administration

  • Dispatching and more

One of the key strengths of Iowa Central’s Criminal Justice program is its faculty. Many instructors are either currently serving or have extensive experience in the Criminal Justice field. Among the teaching staff are former and active professionals, including a police chief, a chief deputy, a detective, criminal prosecutors, a former state trooper, and a correctional officer. This real-world expertise ensures students receive high-quality, practical instruction that prepares them for careers in the field.

Students enrolled in Iowa Central’s Criminal Justice program have multiple educational pathways to choose from:

  • Diploma Program: Completion of 30 core semester hours.

  • Associate of Applied Sciences (A.A.S.) Degree: Requires specific core semester hours.

  • Associate of Arts (A.A.) Degree: Designed for students planning to continue their education at a four-year institution.

Graduates aiming to become certified law enforcement officers in Iowa must successfully complete an accredited law enforcement academy. Iowa Central’s Criminal Justice program provides foundational knowledge and hands-on training to help students prepare for this challenge.
