Free Screenings for Oral, Head and Neck Cancers at Iowa Central

    Public Information Office
    4/14/2025

In recognition of Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month this April, Iowa Central Community College is proud to offer free cancer screenings to the public on Thursday, April 17, from 3 to 6 p.m. The event will take place at the Dental Hygiene Clinic in Room 102 of the Applied Science and Technology (AST) Building. Both appointments and walk-ins are welcome.

These types of cancers can affect the mouth, throat, voice box, sinuses, nasal cavity, or salivary glands. In 2024, over 58,000 new cases were diagnosed in the United States, with more than 12,000 resulting in death. A major contributing factor is HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), which is linked to nearly 70% of head and neck cancer cases.

Early detection saves lives. Some warning signs to watch for include:

  • A red or white spot in your mouth that doesn't heal

  • Persistent sore throat or swollen tonsils

  • Voice changes

  • Lumps in the neck

  • Earaches

  • Difficulty swallowing

This event is hosted by the Iowa Central Dental Hygiene Program, in collaboration with medical professionals including dentists, oral surgeons, and physicians. Screenings like this have made a meaningful impact in the past—providing referrals and life-saving early detection for community members and students alike.

Take a proactive step in protecting your health. Stop by on April 17 and bring a friend—you could save a life.

The campus has a spectacular structure. ICCC has individual learning, as it is a school with a "smaller" number of students, the teachers give you more attention which helps you better understand the subject. The ARC helps students, as there is a reading and writing center inside, as well as tutors for general subjects.
