Iowa Central Community College will once again welcome the community to campus for its beloved Sounds of the Season concerts, an annual tradition that brings together the talents of the college’s vocal and instrumental ensembles for two evenings of festive music.
Performances will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, and Friday, December 5, in Decker Auditorium. Both concerts are free and open to the public. A Presidential Holiday Reception will take place prior to Thursday’s performance beginning at 6 p.m.
The Jazz Band, directed by Paul Bloomquist, will open the concerts with a lively set blending classic holiday warmth with contemporary style. Audiences can expect upbeat arrangements of well-loved seasonal favorites and a few unexpected twists that highlight the ensemble’s versatility.
Under the direction of Jacob Pedersen, the Concert Choir will present a selection of traditional and modern choral pieces, ranging from reflective carols to rich, layered harmonies that showcase the depth of the ensemble. Student performers shared their enthusiasm for this year’s selections, noting the dynamic contrast between delicate unison passages and powerful full-choir moments.
The program will also include performances by the Vocal Jazz and Vocal Ensemble groups, who will bring a smooth, intimate energy to the stage with holiday standards and jazz-influenced classics.
The Concert Band, directed by Bloomquist, will bring the evening to a dramatic finish with a blend of symphonic holiday literature and audience favorites. From sweeping orchestral selections to pieces that capture the whimsical spirit of the season, the band’s performance promises to be both nostalgic and energizing. Featured student soloists will take the spotlight throughout the program, sharing works they have spent months preparing.
For many students, Sounds of the Season is a highlight of the year—a chance to share their dedication, creativity, and hard work with family, friends, and the wider community.
Iowa Central is extremely welcoming and has since day one felt like a home.
