Fort Dodge, Iowa - Iowa Central Community College is pleased to announce the hiring of Jill Nelson as Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, a senior leadership role that will strengthen the college’s strategic execution, government relations, and institutional alignment at the local, state, and national levels.
In this role, Nelson will serve as a strategic advisor to the President, providing leadership across major institutional initiatives while playing a central role in advancing Iowa Central’s government relations strategy. She will work closely with elected officials, policymakers, and community partners to advocate for the college’s priorities, ensure clear and consistent communication, and strengthen relationships that support student success, workforce development, and long-term institutional sustainability.
Nelson brings nearly two decades of experience in organizational leadership, strategic planning, and community engagement. Most recently, she served as Vice President of the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance, where she was deeply involved in government relations, public-private partnerships, and regional economic development. Her work included regular engagement with local and state officials, presentations before governing bodies, and collaboration on initiatives aligned with public policy and community priorities.
“I am grateful for my time at the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance and the opportunity to work alongside incredible leaders and partners who are dedicated to advancing economic development and community growth,” states Nelson. "While at the Growth Alliance, I've had the privilege of partnering with Iowa Central on a variety of initiatives, an experience that has given me a deep appreciation for the college's impact. Those experiences have shaped my commitment to collaboration and advocacy, and I’m excited to bring those relationships and insights to my new role at Iowa Central Community College.”
“Jill is a proven relationship-builder and strategic thinker who understands how institutions succeed at the intersection of policy, community, and execution,” said Iowa Central President Dr. Jesse Ulrich. “Her experience in government relations and her ability to navigate complex initiatives will be a tremendous asset as Iowa Central continues to advance its mission and advocate effectively for our students and region.” Her appointment reflects Iowa Central’s continued commitment to proactive leadership, strong public partnerships, and strategic alignment in support of student success and community impact.
Nelson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Luther College and has a Certificate of Organization Management through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for Organization Management. Jill and her husband, Derek, live on an acreage in Calhoun County with their 4 children.
I love the late nights in the library studying with friends, sometimes laughing more than studying.
