New Skills Based Testing Program Offered at Iowa Central Community College
Iowa Central Community College is pleased to announce a new opportunity for people interested in improving their work-related skills through proficiency-based testing in the Industrial Machinist program. “We are now offering proficiency-based courses where students can earn their degree by completing courses using hands on skills through proficiency testing,” says Dr. Stacy Mentzer, Vice President of Instruction at Iowa Central Community College. “What is different about this process is that many employers in our nine-county service area need individuals with these skills and need them on the job. Proficiency-based testing creates a win-win situation because people can work while they gain the skills they need,” added Dr. Mentzer.
The new program offers a flexible learning option for the employee and the employer. “The employee will not need to spend a long day in a classroom to learn the skills they need. Instead, employees are in a learning environment that suits their lifestyle, yet is led by an instructor,” shares Dr. Mentzer. During the training process, the employees test out of each skill and then move on to the next area of training.
Dr. Mentzer says the new proficiency-based testing is a wonderful option for individuals and companies who have employees who need to upgrade their skill set. “With proficiency-based testing, the employer maintains their employee while increasing that employee’s value through training,” explains Dr. Mentzer.
Some of the courses that are offered include precision measurements, blueprint reading, mill operations, beginning welding, technical math, quality assurance, advanced computerized numerical control and more. I chose Iowa Central because I loved the campus environment. Everyone was so welcoming. The softball team made it feel like a home away from home.
