On Friday October 18th the first and second year Iowa Central Dental Hygiene students participated in the annual Iowa Mission of Mercy Event(Iowa MOM)  held in Des Moines at the  Varied Industry building at the state fairgrounds.

The Iowa MOM is a two-day free dental clinic for any child or adult that needs dental services, regardless of income or previous dental history. Services included cleanings, extractions, fillings, a limited number of root canals, and a limited number of "flipper" partials. An individual's most severe problem was given first priority. Services were administered on a first-come, first-served basis, so there were long lines and many camped out over night to receive services.

Childcare was available for children while services were being provided. Interpreters were also available in some languages for those who require it. One first year student, Marilyn Gutierrez was able to assist one of our participating faculty Mrs. DeWall in translation services and assist in providing care.

This is the third year Iowa Central dental hygiene participated in the Iowa MOM event. Each year the event is located in a different city.

The Iowa Central Dental Hygiene students were able to experience the community outreach and help where needed. Students assisted dentists and observed oral surgeries. Students participated by doing radiology, sterilization, exit interviews, running patients, assembling anesthetic syringes.

Amy Lu a first year student observed and commented, "This is such a great thing, but also sad", in reference to the numerous unmet dental needs of the community.

Many of the local Iowa Central supervising dentists participated as well, so it was a great opportunity to work together caring for the community outside the dental hygiene campus clinic. Our full time and part time faculty participated as well, providing dental hygiene care to those participants.

Thanks to the faculty and students for providing care to those in need and for making this a great event.
