This fall, students from the Introduction to Gerontology class have been learning all about aging and the life course.  Ask any student in this course “What are the activities that anyone can do to improve their quality of life and add extra years to life?” and they will tell you:   volunteering, traveling, doing crossword puzzles, socializing, exercising and having a spiritual sense of meaning in life.

To create relevance for these students, Iowa Central has partnered with Friendship Haven residents (with the help of Steve Ehrhardt, Life Enrichment Coordinator).  Mr. Ehrhardt and Instructor Trueblood arranged monthly times where the students and residents could participate in activities together.  A few of the activities included “testing your memory”, exercising your brain and body as well as exploring ideas of the different generations.

As the Baby Boomer generation ages, so will the field of gerontology.  The students have learned about the different occupations that will open up in the near future in this field and what they will need as far as education to fill the anticipated jobs.

This has been a great experience for both the students and residents at Friendship Haven.
