Iowa Central Community College’s 52nd Commencement celebrated the achievement of over 500 graduates on Thursday, May 9th. Speakers for the ceremony included Student Senate President Lexi Jeno; All-Iowa Academic Team & All-USA Academic Team Nominee, Emma Degner; and Iowa State Senator Tim Kraayenbrink. Graduates and their families gathered at the Triton Cafe after the commencement for a celebratory reception.
Hundreds of family and friends gathered in the Hodges Fieldhouse Thursday afternoon. Traditional commencement music, played by Iowa Central’s Concert Band, greeted the graduates during their academic procession. Iowa Central President Dr. Dan Kinney and Board of Trustees President Mark Crimmins welcomed the graduates and their families. “We are proud of your achievements and bestow upon you our very best wishes for continued future successes,” stated Crimmins.
Student Ambassador Olivia Mitchell presented the annual Golden Triton Award to Rochelle Green and Janet Hilbert. This award is given to one faculty and one staff member in recognition of their excellent service to the college. Following the award presentation, Student Senate President Lexi Jeno made an address to her fellow classmates and spoke about her experiences; urging graduates to never forget what helped shaped them. Emma Degner provided inspiring words to her fellow graduates. “Go out, take what you have learned at Iowa Central Community College and run, explore, take risks and enjoy this journey called life,” said Degner.
Senator Tim Kraayenbrink delivered an insightful commencement speech on graduates getting a “return on their investment”; relating advice for graduates to his 33 years of experience as a financial advisor. Senator Kraayenbrink emphasized that Iowa Central plays an important role in providing the workforce with responsibly trained and educated individuals.
"I hope all of you receive big returns on your investment from your Iowa Central experiences,” said Kraayenbrink. “You have the assets it takes to succeed. You have the proper investments. Growing in a bear market, you are well diversified. It is time to cash in on some of your dividends, work hard for your goals; your market timing couldn’t be any better. Go make the state of Iowa a better place.”
Proceeding the speech, graduates walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. The college recognized those that earned their High School Equivalency Diploma and various Associate Degrees and Diplomas. Once the diplomas were presented, President Dr. Dan Kinney addressed the group once more saying, “Graduates, you may switch your tassels.”
The entire Iowa Central 52nd Commencement was broadcast live over YouTube. Those interested in viewing the event can watch it on the college’s YouTube page at youtube.com/IowaCentralCC.
I chose Iowa Central because I loved the campus environment. Everyone was so welcoming. The softball team made it feel like a home away from home.
