Fort Dodge, IA - On Monday, June 24th, over 100 graduates of Iowa Central Community College’s Practical Nursing and Associate Degree Nursing programs gathered in Decker Auditorium, at the Fort Dodge campus, to be honored during the college’s annual Nursing Pinning Ceremony. Speaking at the ceremony was Christina Foth, Director of Nursing and John Hansen, Dean of STEMM. Giving the ceremony address was Deb Shriver, retired Chief Nursing Executive from Trinity Regional Medical Center. Following the ceremony, graduates gathered with family and friends at a special reception at the college.

Nursing pinning ceremonies have been a time-honored tradition among the nursing community. Acting as a symbol of welcoming graduates into the nursing profession, pins are presented to recipients as they walk across the stage in a tradition known as Conferring of Pins. Iowa Central specially designed these pins for the nursing class of 2019. After receiving their honors, pledges were made towards their new profession. Graduates of the Practical Nursing program recited the Practical Nursing Pledge and those that received an Associates Degree in Nursing read aloud the Nightingale Pledge.

Deb Shriver, a retired Chief Nursing Executive, addressed the graduates on their achievements. “My message will be quite simple because you’ve already done all the work. You’ve studied and you’ll continue to be a lifelong learner,” said Shriver. “The work is hard. Many days you’ll go home exhausted, mentally and physically. You’ll think about what you could’ve done better, but see and think of the great value of your everyday work.”

Now donning their new pins, the graduates are ready to continue on in the nursing profession. Some will enter the workforce as nurses and others begin their preparations to become registered nurses by attempting to pass the NCLEX exam.

“We are extremely proud of the accomplishments that our graduates have made,” said Dr. Dan Kinney, President of Iowa Central Community College. “From here, they will go out and change people’s lives here in Iowa and across the country. We have great nursing programs here that provide the right tools and training for nursing students to excel in their career.”

The entire Iowa Central Nursing Pinning Ceremony was broadcasted live on the college’s YouTube channel. Those interested in viewing the event can watch it at

I have enjoyed meeting a lot of new friends and hanging out with them from other states or countries that come and learn at Iowa Central.
