The Iowa Central campus got a little extra spring cleaning this week in observance of Earth Day.
A group of around 20 students from Iowa Central Student Government, TRIO and Phi Theta Kappa came together with buckets and trash bags to pick up litter and debris across campus and around the parking garage.
“It’s a big once a year project,” said Austin Layton, a student who works on the Iowa Central Buildings and Grounds crew. “This is part of our job every day, but for a day in the spring we get the students and staff involved and it helps us out so much.”
Teighan Osborne volunteered her afternoon with Student Senate, picking up a bucket and a grabbing tool to help collect litter in the parking garage.
“We try to do as many service projects in Student Senate as we can,” said Osborne. “It’s a great day to be out here for Earth Day, but also because there are a lot of things on campus coming up.”
Whitney Elkin joined a group of students and staff from TRIO to take part in the clean-up.
“One of our activities as part of TRIO is assisting with community service projects,” said Elkin.
Lindsey Nelsen and Olivia Andersen volunteered as members of Phi Theta Kappa.
“We’re glad to be out here today helping,” said Nelsen. “With the musical and graduation coming, that means a lot of people will be visiting the campus and it’s important to have everything looking nice.”
“It’s great to have everyone helping,” said Layton. “Everything will be looking perfect for spring events and graduation.”
Iowa Central was the best academic and economic option for me.
