Iowa Central musicians will be partnering with a local church to present a special musical worship service Saturday.
The Triton Singers will be presenting “Gloria, A Brazilian Style Mass,” an original composition by Will Lopes, director of vocal music at Iowa Central, at 7 p.m. Saturday at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge.
“Gloria” is a musical setting of a traditional mass with a Latin-style twist, featuring music and lyrics by Lopes.
The performance is a commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the piece’s debut.
“It features all of the components of the liturgical mass,” said Lopes. “There is a Gloria, Kyrie, Alleluia, Agnus Dei, the Gospel acclamation; everything that a traditional mass would have, but with original music.
The mass will be accompanied by a Brazilian style jazz combo featuring Tood Mason on bass, Isac Jamba on drums, Shelly Bottorff and Lopes on keyboard and Elinor Jensen on flute.
Each setting of the mass will incorporate a different style of Brazilian music including Bossa Nova, Samba, Baiao, and Maracato.
“The vocal parts are all in English, but what makes it unique is that we will feature the four main rhythms we use in Brazilian music,” Lopes said. “All of the music is from the northeast part of Brazil, and with Isak also being from Brazil, we will capture the styles well.”
The Gloria performance will also feature special music, soloists, prayer and a reflection by Pastor Jerry Raether of Humboldt.
The event is free and open to the public.
Diversity is important to me. For people to learn and grow, there must be diversity in the workplace, schools, and sports. That is another reason I wanted to go to Iowa Central; there are so many people here from across the world, all with different backgrounds and life experiences. I saw Iowa Central as an opportunity not only to grow in both academics and in athletics, but also to become a stronger person.
