FORT DODGE - Iowa Central’s Kris Nerem-Lowery has been elected as the new president of Iowa TRIO this month. Lowery, who has been involved in Iowa Central’s Student Support Services for six years and involved with the TRIO Program for 11 years, will now head the Iowa Chapter of TRIO.

“This is an honor and a privilege and it’s also very humbling,” said Nerem-Lowery of her election. “I am excited to get an opportunity to represent TRIO programs in Iowa and be a voice for our students.”

Nerem-Lowery’s primary responsibility as president will be to oversee the Board of Directors for Iowa which conducts business on behalf of all members. She will also be an advocate for the TRIO programs in the state and the region as well as the students.

“It’s our goal as an organization to provide the best possible services to the students that we serve,” said Nerem-Lowery. “Also, as president, I will encourage all of the professionals in TRIO to advocate for our programs to continue to receive funding.”

TRIO Iowa has 26 college or university members and is a regional member of the Mid-America Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (MAEOPP). This region includes Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin.

TRIO, which began in 1965, is a set of federally-funded college opportunity programs that aims to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of a college degree. TRIO has programs beginning in middle school and continues through graduate school. More than 840,000 low-income, first generation students and students with disabilities are served by more than 2,900 programs nationally, with more than 1,000 of those programs at the college or university level. The programs included in TRIO are Student Support Services, Educational Talent Search, upward Bound, Veterans Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math & Science, Educational Opportunity Centers and Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement.
