Iowa Central Community College Board of Trustees approved a flat-rate tuition and fees amount for full-time students for the 2019-20 school year. In-state students will pay $2850 per semester to take 12 to 18 credits. At 18 credits, students will only pay $158.33 per credit, positioning Iowa Central at one of the lowest per credit rates in the state.

Our incentive flat-rate full-time tuition for students who reside in a border state and have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher is set at $2950. Out-of-state and international students will pay $4100 for full-time enrollment. Part-time students will continue to pay per credit; the per-credit rate will be set next spring. Students taking more than 18 credits will pay the flat-rate amount plus the per-credit rate.

In addition to this flat rate, eligible students will be able to check out a Surface Go for the semester. Microsoft’s website describes the Surface Go as “giving you laptop performance, tablet portability, and a stunning touchscreen.” Details of this check-out eligibility will be decided before fall enrollment begins.

Dr. Dan Kinney, President, explained the project’s value: “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students here at Iowa Central.  We feel that the playing field can be leveled by going to the flat rate and Surface Go access.  The costs of attending college continue to increase, and the flat rate allows students to take more classes without higher tuition costs.  Where technology is involved, we now can meet the needs of our students and assist them to achieve at their highest abilities with increased accessibility.”  This flat rate makes taking 18 credits more affordable for all full-time students.  In 2017-18, more than 80 percent of our students, not including high school partnerships, were enrolled full-time.

These two projects meets three goals. The first goal is to increase affordability for students who need more than 60 credits to complete their degree or who need remedial coursework that does not count toward a degree. Second, Surface Go check out increases the flexibility of our learning environment and equitable access to increasingly online coursework. Finally, affordability and access will increase student success and graduation rates. Dr. Stacy Mentzer, Interim Vice President of Instruction, adds, “Our faculty have been buzzing about the increased access our students will have to technology.  This can really open the doors to how our faculty teach and how our students learn.”

Iowa Central is awesome. There are personable teachers, a large campus feel, excellent music and drama departments, and the college is generous with scholarships. I’ve had some of the best experiences of my life here.
