Instrumental Music

Instrumental music at Iowa Central consists of Concert Band, Jazz Band, Brass Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Marching Band, Pep Band, and other performing opportunities including the Musical Pit Orchestra and Encore Singers Pit.

Concert Band is open to all Iowa Central students. It involves the performance of quality band literature with emphasis being placed on musicianship and interpretation. This group rehearses three times weekly and is frequently called upon to perform at both the college and community events.

The Jazz Band is an ensemble designed to explore the various styles of popular and jazz music with emphasis placed on musicianship, solo performance and improvisation. They perform three major concerts each year, and tour throughout the area in the winter and spring. They are requested to perform at a variety of functions throughout the area, and have the opportunity to record a CD. Jazz Band members must also be Concert Band members.

The Brass Ensemble is open to students enrolled in Concert Band that play a Brass instrument. The ensemble is set up to explore the music set aside for a Brass quintet. Students will be divided into Brass quintets and perform during the concert series and are asked to perform at additional Iowa Central and Community events.

Percussion Ensemble involves the study and performance of percussion literature for a variable ensemble (from quartets to large ensembles), and is open to all students regardless of major or primary instrument. Students will experience literature from contemporary marching battery and pit, to jazz, Taiko and other world music. The “Legion of Boom” Drum Line rehearses as part of the percussion ensemble course during the fall. Students will perform as part of concerts in the fall and spring semesters, a spring percussion concert, and other events as requested. This course is required of all percussion majors.

The Triton Marching Band and “Legion Of Boom” Drum Line support college events during the fall semester and is open to all students regardless of major. Members attend a preseason camp which occurs a few days prior to the start of the fall semester, as well as rehearsals 2-3 times per week. The Triton Marching Band uses a combination of corps-style fundamentals with show band attitude, providing the atmosphere and energy of a contemporary college marching band.

The Pep Band supports college events during the spring semester and is open to all students regardless of major. The Pep Band gives student performers the opportunity to play traditional and present-day band music while adding support to the men and women’s basketball teams. Rehearsals begin at the end of the fall semester following the completion of marching band.

Every spring, a volunteer ensemble is assembled to perform in Iowa Central's annual musical. These students learn the experience of professional pit musicians.

Applied lessons are available to any Iowa Central student for any instrument.

I chose Iowa Central because of the amazing opportunities and teachers. When I came to visit, I fell in love with the teachers in my program of study.
