Truck Driver Training and Education

How do you become a Truck Driver?

  • Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers usually have a high school diploma or GED (required by most employers) and attend a professional truck driving school to obtain their CDL.
  • It is now required that new CDL permit holders (anyone who obtained their permit on or after 2-7-22) take a professional truck driving course to learn how to maneuver large vehicles safely and the federal laws and regulations associated with truck driving.
  • Entry Level Driver Training must be completed with an approved training provider, such as Iowa Central TTC. Click here to get the full list of requirements for the ELDT and how to get your CDL.
  • After taking and passing your ELDT and DOT tests to get your CDL, drivers must maintain a clean driving record and pass a DOT physical exam every two years.
  • Drivers are also subject to random testing for drug and alcohol abuse. If convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or convicted of a felony, a driver’s CDL can be suspended.
