Iowa Central Community College is celebrating Black History Month with a series of events throughout February, recognizing the extensive contributions of Black leaders and culture.
This month's events follow on the heels of our January recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when students were invited to reflect on and share their favorite quotes from Dr. King, setting the stage for learning and engagement.
February’s events kicked off with Black History Trivia, where students tested their knowledge and won diversity pins and other prizes. Near the café entrance, the Iowa Central Diversity Team set up trivia questions, plinko game, prizes, and more. The Triton Café also served a special lunch featuring cultural favorites such as fried chicken, sweet potatoes, baked mac and cheese, collard greens, and black eye peas.
“It is important that we recognize the many valuable contributions that these individuals have made throughout history,” said Kris Nerem Lowery, a member of the Iowa Central Diversity Committee.
“Black history is an essential part of American history,” added Brandon Bush, student activities assistant director at Iowa Central. “Our campus is incredibly diverse, and we strive to create events that honor and educate about different cultures. Events like this, the Afro-Latino Festival, and the Native American Walking Gallery help highlight the significance of these contributions.”
UPCOMING - Black History Month Concert – Presented by the Iowa Central Music Department on February 14 at 7 p.m.at the Fort Museum Opera House.

I love having a home away from home with all the friendships I have created.
